A family of VW's

My dad bought the first VW for our family in 1956 when he was in Germany studying, it was an oval window bug. Dad brought it back to the United States when he came home and it was a primary driver as the family grew to be 5 boys under the age of 7. That bug was replaced with 1964 sunroof bug because the seven of us needed more air, later there was a 1967 squareback , later a 1972 bus and a Karmann Ghia. Dad did all of the maintenance on the cars and showed my brothers and I how to take care of them.

When each of my brothers and I became drivers we bought a VW, we had one of every type, Westphalia bus, Thing, single and double cab transporters, 21 window bus, Baja bugs, squarebacks. We learned how to replace clutches, rebuild engines and remove transaxles to get rebuilt by a specialist. I later built a stake bed on a 1969 bug that we called the "Bugtruck" which I sold to my Dad because it was not practical for my family. Dad drove the Bugtruck for 23 years and put over 100,000 miles on it, it got alot of attention and many people took pictures as they passed by. My brothers and I have a great appreciation for all VW's.
